Getting to Fort Tiracol: A ferry ride for both you and your vehicle

Goa is best explored by road, on a two wheeler or by car. The Goan landscape is interspersed with rivers, making the ferry another mode of local transport in some pockets of the state. Among the many drives we did, this one was interesting because of the ferry experience, where both you and your vehicle are ferried across to continue your journey!

At the northern most point of Goa

Located at the northern tip of Goa, at the mouth of the Tiracol River is Fort Tirocol. This is accessible by a ferry from the northern most point of Goa or by road from Sawantwadi, in neighboring Maharashtra.  From Panjim it’s a 42km drive to Querim from where we took the ferry ride.

The fort was built in the 17^th century by the Raja of Sawantwadi. But what you see today are the ruins which has been converted into a hotel, the Fort Tiracol Heritage.

Located on a hillock on the banks of the Tiracol river, it offers beautiful river views. Within the fort is a church, opened only on a few occasions during the year. Otherwise, there isn’t much to see here.

When we visited, the hotel was closed for renovation and only a handful of tourists were walking around. If your looking for a drive around North Goa with a ferry ride thrown in, then this would make an interesting stop!
