A `Madafu’ (Coconut) Break

I recently read somewhere, that currently the big thing in the US health food industry is bottled coconut water. The slightly sour tasting water taken from unripe green coconuts is cholesterol free, fat free, and packed with electrolytes and potassium. In India and now here in Zanzibar, we fortunately have access to the real thing.

Having tasted the tender coconut water in both countries I can vouch for them having the same taste!

The difference lies in the art of cutting the coconut. Here, the top of the tender coconut is cut such that you can drink the water without using a straw or spilling it down your neck.

Next, the coconut seller skilfully cuts and scoops out the coconut before handing it back to you.

I think, he does a pretty neat job!
